A hardware device supports onboard satellite imagery processing, including raw-EO data processing and deep learning. Meanwhile, it supports the tokenisation of the space asset, connecting directly with the ground blockchain network.

Decentralised Satellite Infrastructure (DSI)

Decentralised Satellite Infrastructure (DSI) constructs a distributed, transparent, collaborative environment for space with the features listed here.  

DSI integrates blockchain and introduces open protocols to constellation governance, allowing participating satellites to join the network in an efficient and secure way. A hardware requirement is proposed that any satellites that meet the requirement can participate in the DSI.

DSI connects to the ground internet via ground stations and blockchain nodes, bringing the two networks together while maintaining the advantage of each. Blockchain capabilities extend to sandboxing, which sharply increase the security of the constellation.

The DSI development will be a long-term procedure with the revolution of spacecraft, satellite communication and networking technologies. We have divided them into its front end, the digital earth cortex (DEC), embedded backend and hardware.

Digital Earth Corvex (DEC)

DEC is a foundation for crowdsourced applications and services, by interaction with map and location information, with support from machine learning, blockchain and advanced space technologies. It connects databases from multiple satellite remote sensing data providers, allowing customers to select data from various sources.

DEC is tailored to the leading standards of user experience and frontend development technologies to maximise the usage automation and machine computation, eliminating the knowledge barrier for accessibility. Integrated blockchain technology is adopted to protect data security and to complete quick audits, eliminating suppliers’ security concerns and bringing a convenient user experience to customers.

DEC aggregates the traditional industries of Geographic Information System (GIS), Earth Observation (EO) and Cloud Computation. Meanwhile, it disrupts these industries with solution ecosystems that serve a much more comprehensive range of audiences, from technology experts with extensive knowledge of machine learning and cloud computing to the general public with little knowledge of Earth Observation and data analysis.

SpaceChain Callisto

SpaceChain Callisto is an open-source demo hardware board. It is pre-installed with a dual operating system SpaceChain operating system (SPC OS) and Linux OS which logically separates the environment between on-chain and off-chain environments, ensuring transparent yet secure access to space services. Edge computation capabilities including machine learning algorithms, and native Blockchain transaction makes possible the tokenisation of space assets and space services.

SpaceChain Callisto is equipped with ZYNQ FPGA and integrated with a power supply system, DDR, NAND flash, TF card and Ethernet.

The hardware board comes with 42-pin I/O ports, allowing advanced users to use Vivado to program the board and include functions such as UART, I2C and CAN.

The Callisto hardware board is configured to be similar to our on-orbit payload that was installed in the International Space Station (ISS) in December 2019.

Championing the fusion of blockchain and space, Zee Zheng believes that these technologies will enable a new era of seamless global collaboration. Having launched 2 blockchain-enabled satellite payloads into orbit within SpaceChain’s first 2 years of operation, Zee has been recognized as a pioneer in this industry and has been sought as a speaker at events like Space Tech Summit, SpaceTide and Space Forum. Zee is a notable honoree of the Forbes 30 under 30 Asia List of 2022. He honed his entrepreneurship at Draper University, his space expertise at the International Space University, and is a graduate of Columbia University. He is also a Lee Kuan Yew Senior Fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore.

Cliff Beek

Having 25 plus years of progressive experience providing leadership and strategic direction to high growth technology companies, their board of directors and senior management. Today, Cliff serves as CEO of SpaceChain, developing the world’s first decentralized blockchain platform distributed across Low Earth Orbit [LEO] satellite infrastructure. Cliff earned an MBA from Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and a BA from the George Washington University.

Previously, he worked in the Linux industry for  over 15 years under Linus Torvalds and he was the key Linux kernel engineer. Jeff’s code can be found in every Android phone and data center. The co-founder of Bloq, Jeff is also the leader of the Ethereum protocol networking subsystem.

Ziheng Xiang

Ziheng Xiang directs the product development of SpaceChain UK and leads research and development of SpaceChain. Built on his extensive knowledge and experience in engineering and scientific projects, he has successfully led two ESA contracts and one Innovate UK project. Ziheng holds a PhD degree in Physics from University of Cambridge. He is also an early developer of DLT and data applications, as well as a lead engineer in Cambridge Quantum Communications network.

Evan Slattery

Evan Slattery’s passion for space technology is what led him to pursue a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Limerick. Building on his aeronautics background, he completed a MSc in Space Studies at the International Space University, in Strasbourg, France. It was during his MSc that Evan became interested in entrepreneurial and business opportunities that are possible in the space and blockchain sectors. His industry experience includes the aviation and space launch vehicle sectors in both the UK and Europe.

He is also an active researcher and has led several software engineering/blockchain research projects. Nemitari is a Research Associate at the Centre for Blockchain Technologies (University College London), Certified Microsoft Technology Associate in Databases, Certified SAS Base 9 Programmer and Certified Security Testing Associate (CSTA). He is also an active researcher leading DLT research with UCL and NTU.
